PRINCE OF WALES MUSEUM

Built in 1914 the Prince of Wales museum is a confluence of mid Victorian Gothic-Moorish style building made up of basalt stone and crowned by a sparkling white dome.
Designed by
George wittewt, the foundation stone was laid in 1905 by the visiting Prince of Wales.

The construction of the building was completed in 1914, converted to a military hospital during the WorldWarI , and finally opened in 1923 by
Lady Loyd, the wife of the then governor of Mumbai(Bombay).

The museum has 3 main sections viz. Art, Archaeology and National History.

It boasts a good collection of ancient Indus valley artifacts dating back to 2000B.C. plus some priceless Tibetan and Nepali art.

There is an entire gallery devoted to Buddhist tanka scrolls and Tibetan bronzes, but the chief attraction here is the collection of over 2000 miniature paintings from the various art schools in India.

The beautiful and serene paintings of the
Ajanta , Ellora and Elephanta and other historic places are also in view here.

Do not forget to see the Parsi's
'Tower of Silence'.
